Backpacking in the Brooks Range

Backpacking in the Brooks Range is the ultimate backpacking experience. Until you experience it, it's hard to imagine what it feels like to be a true explorer, with absolutely no trails, markers or campsites directing your way. Instead, we rely on the vegetation and terrain to tell us the best way to navigate through this primal landscape. A typical hiking route includes flat riverbars or dry tundra, as well as more challenging tussocks and boggy areas, all often covered with a carpet of wildflowers in June and July, or the rich autumn colors in August. One of the most memorable aspects of Brooks Range backpacking is the sensation of walking in ancient caribou (and sometimes bear) trails, becoming one momentarily with the timeless flow of wild animals across this land.

Ask us for the specifics of each of our scheduled backpack trips—we like to explore different routes each season and often select a final option as the group comes together. Each of these trips shares many characteristics, as well as having unique features. On all of our trips you can count on spectacular scenery and much higher odds of seeing animals than any other people. We select our hiking distances (20–50 miles) and pace to fit this rugged land, so the trips are enjoyable, as well as an adventure, for any well-prepared backpacker.
